If you scroll down foodie TikTok, you might have encountered ASMR videos featuring Tanghulu– a traditional Chinese snack with a burst of fruity flavor and a powerful crunch. You might have even found Tanghulu in Boston at events like the Lunar New Year Parade or various Chinese and food festivals throughout the year.
But if you’re curious if there’s a Tanghulu spot in or near you in Boston to get your fix any time of year, here’s where to go.
Where to find Tanghulu in Boston?
There’s a Tanghulu vendor hidden inside Super 88 Market in Allston! The Packard’s Corner market has dozens of Asian food vendors inside serving everything from Ramen to mochi donuts and now Tanghulu!
Kwa Food at Super 88 is where you’ll find dozens of Tanghulu flavors to select from in Boston.
What is Tanghulu?
Tanghulu “flavors” simply refer to the fruit of choice. Tanghulu is a skewer of fresh fruit dipped in liquified sugar until it becomes encrusted in rock-hard formations in several layers, creating a glossy, crunchy, fruity treat.
It’s like nature’s rock candy!
At Kwa Food, flavors offered include strawberry, grape, tangerine, blueberry, and lychee! More exotic Tanghulu flavors include yam, black jujube, tomatoes bing, hawthorn bean paste, and hawthorn rice bing. Prices range from $3-$5 a stick.
The Chinese snack originated in Beijing and is now popular around the globe. Yet, it has proved rather difficult to source in Boston. Until now!
