It’s been a great year for New England sports, and the Olympics proved no different. Although competing for “Team USA,” we can’t help but claim a little extra pride when our New England athletes prove an integral part of USA medals.
Several athletes in particular from New England already broke records. 20-year-old Stoughton native, Federick Richards and teammate 25-year-old Worcester native, Stephen Nedoroscik, 27-year-old Burlington, Vermont native, Ilona Maher, and 26-year-old Liam Corrigan of Old Lyme, CT are stealing the show and inspiring millions in their recent performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
All athletes broke records in their respective sports and brought home medals less than a week into the games. Federick Richards and Stephen Nedoroscik, aka “Mr. Pommel Horse” were integral in helping the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Team win a bronze medal in Paris— the US men’s gymnastics first medal in the last 16 years. Richards broke records prior to the Olympics as well, becoming the youngest American male gymnast to win the individual all-around medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship of 2023.
Ilona Maher spearheaded the U.S. Women’s Rugby Team to its first-ever Olympic sevens medal, defeating Australia and winning bronze.
More recently, 6′ 7″ powerhouse, Liam Corrigan of Old Lyme, Connecticut led the Team USA Men’s Regatta 4 as stroke seat to their first gold victory in over 60 years! The men’s four won bronze 12 years ago.
We can’t wait to keep watching these athletes serve on and off the course! They’ve not only proved their incredible athleticism at the Olympics—but rather cheeky entertainment skills too. Ilona is turning the Olympic Village into Love Island and Stephen is sharing his love of gymnastics and equally impressive Rubix’s Cube skills. Frederick’s amassed a following of over 1 million collectively across his social channels!
