Team USA won its first game against Serbia at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, July 28, 2024. However, coach Steve Kerr’s decision to bench Boston Celtics player, Jayson Tatum, was not well received by fans.
Their next game is Wednesday, July 31 at 3 PM in Paris, or 9 AM EST. Coach Steve Kerr notes in his post-game interview with ESPN reporter, Brian Windhorst, that he “felt like an idiot” benching five-time NBA all-star player, Jayson Tatum, but that they spoke about his decision before the game. Kerr promises, Tatum “will be back” and plans to play him in the Team USA versus South Sudan Olympic Men’s Basketball game on Wednesday.
Regardless, Bostonians are confused, shocked, and frustrated with Steve Kerr’s decision to bench one of the best players in the league. Others commend Tatum for his professionalism and note that’s part of competing in a team sport. Fellow Celtics, Derrick White and Jrue Holiday both had court time in game 1.
