Lehrhaus, Somerville’s “Jewish tavern and house of learning,” that only opened in February of 2023, is already recognized as one of the best new restaurants in America.
The tavern made Esquire’s prestigious list alongside 49 other restaurants. “I’ve been to thousands of restaurants in the past couple of years, but I hadn’t truly felt at home until I walked into Lehrhaus,” notes Esquire Contributor Joshua David Stein, who also described the food at Lehrhaus as “delicious and revelation.”
The first-of-its-kind restaurant in the Boston-area is half farm-to-table restaurant serving up Jewish classics and half knowledge center for community to gather and learn while nibbling on some really great noshes.
On the menu at Lehrhaus are the famous Lehrhaus Deviled Eggs made with huevos haminados style and pickled mustard seed. There’s also a “Chopped Not-Liver” made from eggplant and nuts instead of the traditional chicken liver.
Heartier noshes and entrees include the Haus Herring Tartine with cultured butter, labneh, and pickled peppers, the Mac+Cheese Kugel made with shaved zucchini “kashkarikas” and sunflower seeds, or the vegetarian Lehrhaus Beet “Pastrami” Reuben served with sauerkraut, melted swiss, Russian dressing.
The restaurant prides itself on its unconventional and humorous take on refined food. You’ll even find Lactose pills upon entry to help you comfortably enjoy your dinner and maybe the delightful Halva Ice Cream Sundae for dessert!
On Saturday nights in winter, Lehrhaus transforms in to the “Lehrhaus Burger Bar!” Stop by for a juicy griddled burger with fresh seasonal accompaniments.
