The $10 Commuter Rail weekend pass means you can go just about anywhere from Boston on the weekends. Take a beach trip to Gloucester or head up to Newburyport for teatime at the Garrison Inn’s Ladyfinger Lounge and later go for a stroll downtown by the water.
According to the MBTA website, “weekend passes are valid for unlimited trips on the Commuter Rail starting with the first scheduled trip on Saturday morning and ending with the last scheduled trip on Sunday evening.” This means the pass is valid for round-trip travel and applies to use on both Saturday and Sunday at commuter rail trains outbound from Back Bay, South Station and North Station and all inbound trains from hundreds of unique locations.
How to purchase the Commuter Rail Weekend Pass
Passes do not need to be purchased in advanced and are easily available. There are 3 ways to get your pass:
- Use the mTicket app to download and purchase your pass
- Buy them at your local Boston train station
- Purchase passes on board with cash or credit (make sure to tell the conductor you want the weekend pass)
Where to go?
As the weather is warming up, this is a great offer to take advantage of and an easy way to see Massachusetts. The one caveat is that some train stations are remotely located, and certain towns aren’t very accessible without a car.
However, this is not the case for all stations-we’ve listed some of the state’s best beaches like Good Harbor in Gloucester and Singing Beach in Manchester by the Sea– all accessible by commuter rail, and this map shows all 32 that are listed below. And when in doubt, there’s always Uber!
