The study, conducted by Islands, a travel publication, analyzed the length of peak foliage season, the number of nearby scenic routes, and the availability of hiking trails to determine the top destinations for experiencing vibrant fall colors. According to the final list, Boston ranked at the number 4 spot!
Boston, MA, ranked #4, blends urban beauty with a long-lasting fall foliage season, peaking from October 29 to November 9. The city offers 36 scenic hiking trails and three nearby scenic routes, making it easy for residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in autumn’s vibrant colors. Whether strolling through the iconic Boston Common or cruising along nearby scenic byways, Boston’s mix of rich history and stunning fall foliage truly makes it one of the top destinations for leaf peepers this year.
Half the list of the top 10 are New England towns! In addition to Boston, which ranked fourth, Bar Harbor, Maine ranked second. Two New Hampshire towns nearby Boston also ranked among the top 10, Lincoln at number 6 and Franconia at number 9. Lastly, but certainly not least, Stowe, Vermont rounded up the list at the tenth spot, also being recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful small towns!

Based on fall foliage maps, the report also shares the best dates to visit each city, to experience peak foliage. According to the report, Boston peaks just in time for Halloween, from October 29 through November 9.
