Uvida Shop, Boston’s premiere zero-waste store will reopen its original North End neighborhood. Uvida is Boston’s only zero-waste store.
The founder, Maria Vasco, introduced Boston to Uvida in 2020, while studying at UMASS Boston. The concept was inspired by Vasco’s trip to Europe where she noticed an early adoption of the zero-waste store. Frustrated that back home in Boston there wasn’t a single zero-waste business, Vasco decided she’d pioneer a local movement.
What is a zero-waste store?
Zero-waste is one step beyond a natural shop in that there is no waste produced by the shop in its own operations or goods sold to customers. This means all packaging is reusable, compostable, or recyclable.
Uvida began with just three products and has since expanded to hundreds, plus a strong local zero-waste community who gather for seasonal events like Uvida’s wildly popular clothing swaps.
The clothing swaps are similar to thrifting but instead of “purchasing” new clothes, you exchange items 1 for 1. Bring an item you don’t use and exchange it for something new to love.
We want to make it easier for everyone to find household products that are better for your health and better for the earth,” said Maria Vasco, founder and CEO of Uvida Shop. “By creating this zero-waste space and resource for the community, we hope to make it easier for people to make small changes that have a big impact.
Visit Uvida Shop and you’ll find sections dedicated to bring-your-own-container product refills, home and kitchen essentials without single-use plastic or plastic packaging and a greenhouse assortment tucked in the back.
Uvida enables customers easy access to sustainable options like bamboo brushes or reusable wool dryer balls, greener options that are usually hard to find in most shops. It’s a natural and sustainable zero-waste haven.
The grand reopening for Uvida Shop is on Saturday, April 27 with a ribbon cutting at 1:30 PM.
