Get ready for another stunning celestial event! A bold and bright “strawberry moon” will illuminate Boston this month.
From strawberry fields forever to strawberry moons, June is filled with tons of berry beautiful natural happenings to enjoy!
When is the strawberry full moon?
The full strawberry moon graces Boston skies the night of Friday, June 21. Peak illumination is on Friday around 9:08 PM. To easily observe the moon, hope for clear skies and make sure you’re in an area with low light pollution.
According to Farmer’s Almanac, the strawberry moon glows ten times brighter than a half-moon. Despite its name, this moon doesn’t glow pink.
Why is it called a strawberry moon?
The June moon gets its name not from color, but from the season it appears in. The strawberry moon peaks at the rise of strawberry season and received its names from Native American Algonquian tribes.
What makes this full moon rare?
This moon will be among the lowest full moons observed in years according to Farmer’s Almanac. Due to its low horizon, a “moon illusion” forms, making it appear larger than it really is. The moon itself gives off an orange hue when so low in the sky.
