Over 300 tons, that’s 20 truckloads, of snow will be shipping up to Boston from Loon Mountain for Boston’s inaugural Red Bull Heavy Metal event. Similar to the incredible annual cliff diving event that takes place in Seaport, Red Bull Heavy Metal welcomes some of the world’s top street snowboarders from the mountains to Boston.
Leading the event is X Games Gold Medalist and Snowboarding phenom Zeb Powell! Powell’s goal is to make mountain sports more accessible to city folk, by bringing the mountains to the city.
Sharing the joy of snowboarding with the heart of the Northeast brings so much energy to the sport,” said Powell. “A lot of amazing snowboarders come from around Boston and not everyone knows that. This event exposes more people to the sport who would otherwise never know about it,” said Powell.
Red Bull’s Heavy Metal competition began in Minnesota, where it returns again for a second year, transforming the Minnesota State Capitol Building into a snowboarding park. With New Hampshire’s Loon Mountain Resort as the official sponsor, and Boston as the host city, New England is excited to be the first East Coast region to host the event:
“As a city, we are all about creating exciting and energetic experiences for our residents,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. “Bringing together diverse communities in the heart of the city is truly something special. City Hall Plaza is the people’s plaza and I look forward to seeing it continue to thrive and serve our residents.”
Find the Red Bull Heavy Metal competition on Saturday, February 22 from 2:30-6 PM EST at City Hall Plaza
Spectating opens at 2 PM and the event is free to the public.
