Just one hour north of Boston awaits a half-mile of paradise. Singing Beach is a coastal gem in Massachusetts, just a free 60-minute train ride north.
Hawaiians visiting Boston have been quoted as saying that “Singing Beach most resembles the shores of Hawaii” among the Massachusetts beaches. The beach gets its name from its unique sand that makes a gentle squeaking noise when tread upon.
About Singing Beach
Just over a half-mile wide, the beach is beloved for its clear waters, gentle surf, and unique sand. It’s also about a half-mile between the MBTA Commuter Rail stop and the beach.
While the sand is soft and squeaky, the outer cove of the crescent-shaped beach features a rocky shoreline that adds picturesque wonder to the beach.
There’s a 1920s bathhouse and a small provisions shack on-site.
Note that as of this year, Singing Beach requires a walk-on fee of $5-$10 per day or $35 per season, per person, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Things to do in Manchester-by-the-Sea
The coastal town served as the setting for the Oscar-winning namesake film starring Casey Affleck. The town is small, but there’s plenty to keep you busy on a day trip.
En route from the beach to downtown, grab a cone from Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream.
Manchester-by-the-Sea boasts some sneaky-good consignment shops, check out The Stock Exchange, and Madam Had’em Boutique Consignment, for unique finds.
For pizza, head to Bravo and take it to the beach, or enjoy a sit-down meal at 35 Beach.
Laughing Gull Café is a local favorite for coffee and snacks.
