Governor Maura Healey announced a series of MBTA fare promotions, including free Commuter Rail rides every Friday, aimed at lowering costs and encouraging more people to use public transit.
The announcement was made at North Station alongside Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll and MBTA General Manager Phil Eng. The initiative includes multiple discounts running throughout June, July, and August.
What riders can expect this summer
The MBTA’s seasonal promotion includes several cost-saving options:
- Free Commuter Rail Fridays across all lines
- 50% off monthly passes, offering significant savings for regular riders
- Additional fare reductions designed to boost ridership during peak travel months
According to the MBTA, monthly passholders could save between $321 and $639 over the three-month period, depending on their route.
Why the MBTA is rolling out discounts now
State officials say the initiative comes at a critical time, as Massachusetts prepares for a busy summer filled with major events, including FIFA World Cup matches and MA250 celebrations.
“We are discounting Commuter Rail fares and offering free service on Fridays all summer long, saving people hundreds of dollars,” Healey said in a statement. “We want as many people as possible to choose public transportation for special events and as part of their daily routine.”
Officials also noted that the promotion is designed to improve system efficiency and reduce congestion during high-demand travel periods.
When the deals start
All MBTA Commuter Rail promotions will run from June 1 through August 31, 2026.
