On Friday, December 2, you could find the royal couple, Oscar-winner Rami Malek, soccer superstar, David Beckham, legendary Actress Catherine O’Hara, and many more outside of MGM Music Hall in Fenway. The music venue transformed for the second annual Earthshot Prize awards which celebrated sustainability in Boston and beyond. Earthshot is an environmental prize created by the royal family in 2020 awarding 1-million Euro prizes in five categories: restoration, air quality, oceans, waste reduction, and climate.
Princess Kate wore a green rented designer dress paired with Princess Diana’s emerald choker, looking chic and wearing only secondhand pieces! And many other celebrities sported pieces made of innovative sustainable materials like recycled fabrics or seaweed!
Winners of Boston Earthshot Prize Awards
There are five categories Earthshot designees are awarded in. The categories and winners are listed below:
- Protect and Restore Nature winner- Kheyti (India)- offering farmers a greenhouse in a box
- Clean Our Air winner- Mukuru Clean Stoves (Kenya)– stoves that reduce CO2 emissions by 90%
- Revive Our Oceans winner- Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef (Australia)-protecting Great Barrier Reef ecosystems
- Build A Waste Free World winner- Notpla (UK)-replacing plastic with seaweed
- Fix Our Climate winner- 44.01(Oman)-accelerating removal of harmful CO2 emissions
The royal couple visits Boston
Prince William and Princess Kate were in Boston several days prior to the ceremony on Friday and attended private events in their three days here from November 30 to December 2.
Prince William and Princess Kate spoke publicly at 4:45 PM on Wednesday, November 30 at a welcome event in the brand new Speaker’s Corner of City Hall Plaza.
Mayor Michelle Wu greeted the royal couple upon their arrival on November 30 and stated that she is proud and excited for Boston to host the Earthshot awards ceremony:

During their three-day environmental “Super Bowl” Prince William and Princess Kate visited a variety of places including Greentown Labs in Somerville, The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, non-profit organization Roca in Chelsea, and the Harvard Research Center in Cambridge.
