The cult-favorite Milk Bar bakery, founded by celebrated pastry chef, Christina Tosi, is saying bye-bye to Boston (Cambridge to be accurate). A love story that started with Tosi’s iconic Crack Pie that quickly catapulted into the Milk Bar empire after some aid from David Chang’s Momofoku kingdom decided to close its lone Massachusetts location with its last day of service marked as February 19 on a window sign.
Milk Bar, which has a prospering online direct-to-consumer business in addition to 11 brick-and-mortar stores faced challenges to open this Harvard Square flagship, Milk Bar mini. As fans of the location might know, Milk Bar shared the space with its co-tenant &Pizza, who had a hard-fought battle to bring another pizza location to the pie-filled Harvard Square. Opening in 2019, the two tenants shared in the pool of college students and tourists who appreciated the old-school quick-eat duo. Guests could grab a pizza and slide on over to the bubblegum pink Milk Bar mini for its fantastical funfetti confections, a slice of crack pie, or its notorious Cereal Milk Soft Serve with cornflake crunch.
Both businesses experienced positive reception upon opening. However, 2020 was a different story, due to the pandemic restrictions &Pizza faced challenges staying buoyant. In May 2022, &Pizza officially shut down its only Massachusetts location, leaving Milk Bar with
as the sole tenant of the previously shared space. Tosi visited the location a few months ago for a book signing and lines were out the door, so the closing is quite a shock to all of the Boston fans.
A sign on the Milk Bar location lists Milk Bar Harvard Sqaure’s last day of service noted February 19. The bakery is known for its nostalgic flavors, sweet and salty combinations, exposed layer-cakes, and Cereal Milk everything. Make sure to try some Milk Bar in Boston before it closes its doors for good.
