Medium Rare, the 2-for-1 steak frites spot with several locations across the nation, including one in Watertown, brings its legendary Free Turkey Fry to the Boston area on Thanksgiving Day! This will be Boston’s first free turkey fry, and it takes place on Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving Day! Medium Rare notes that a line usually begins forming around 8 AM the day of the event.
How the Free Turkey Fry works
This is a BYOT (bring your own turkey) event. Here’s how it works:
- Line begins around 8 AM EST
- Turkeys will be deep-fried from 11 AM-4 PM
- Turkey must be no more than 10 pounds
- Your turkey must be fully defrosted
Medium Rare plans to fry over 100 turkeys, up to ten pounds each. The restaurant anticipates making approximately 16 turkeys per hour across four frying stations, with each turkey taking 15-20 minutes to deep-fry. The free event is a celebration of community and a time to share thanks. Medium Rare hopes to fry everyone’s turkeys, encouraging safe and proper turkey preparation.
“We’ve seen the growing need to expand the Free Turkey Fry event year after year,” said Bucher. “It’s great to provide food to those that are struggling to make ends meet, but we often don’t think about how they are going to cook the food. As an offshoot of the Free Turkey Fry program, we launched Feed the Fridge during the COVID pandemic, placing community refrigerators across the DC and paying local restaurants to fill them daily with fresh, ready-to-eat chef-prepared meals. To date, the organization has provided more than one million free meals and injected over $2 million back into neighborhood restaurants. The Turkey Fry event has been a catalyst for donations to Feed the Fridge.”
The charitable event benefits Feed the Fridge— a nonprofit launched by Medium Rare co-founder Mark Bucher. Since its launch in fall 2020, Feed the Fridge delivered over 1 million free, chef-prepared, ready-to-eat meals through strategically placed refrigerators in communities where access to healthy food is limited — and has paid local restaurants over $2 million to prepare those meals.
