Gone are the days of Americans popping into Europe on a moment’s notice. If you’re planning any travel into Europe, new ETIAS travel requirements will strengthen security and pose new travel requirements for Americans going to Europe in 2025. Whether you’re traveling for the Eras Tour or an Italian excursion, here’s what you need to know when traveling internationally.
What is ETIAS?
Short for European Travel Information and Authorization System, ETIAS is a new travel authorization that will be required to travel to and stay in participating European countries for under 90 days.
Who is impacted by this new ruling?
ETIAS will impact those not of European nationality. Those without a residence or permit issued by a participating ETIAS country and travelers who are VISA-exempt nationals from the following countries. This includes nationals of the United States.
Travelers that require a VISA will not also need ETIAS.
What countries require ETIAS?
30 European countries will require VISA-exempt individuals to have an ETIAS travel authorization. Find the full list here.
When will ETIAS requirements roll out?
ETIAS requirements were originally slated for 2022, but the pandemic halted the roll out. Now the requirements are expected to launch in 2025.
The application process:
Luckily, ETIAS is a quick and easy process completed entirely online. It’s unlike a VISA which requires travelers to voyage to their local European embassy.
How to apply for ETIAS?
The ETIAS application process has yet to open. Once the requirements are active, travelers can apply online.
What do you need to apply?
You will need a travel document such as a passport and payment card. Learn more about documentation requirements online.
Are ETIAS and a VISA the same thing?
No. The ETIAS is not a VISA. Americans will not require a VISA to enter Europe, but ETIAS is required. The main differentiator between a VISA and ETIAS is the application process. The ETIAS can be completed online, takes minutes, and the rejection rate is expected to be under 3%. The graphic below explains the key differences:
How much will ETIAS cost?
The application fee is 7 Euros, about $7.63. Applicants under 18 or above 70 years of age are exempt from payment.
How long is a new ETIAS valid for?
Luckily, once your ETIAS is approved it is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires-whichever comes first.
