The City of Champions welcomes yet another elite team. Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca submitted a bid for the Women’s National Basketball Association team, Connecticut Sun, for $325 million.
Pagliuca plans to relocate the team to Boston by 2027. The deal is pending final approval from the WNBA Board of Governors, but with a $100 million practice facility in the works, it’s likely the deal will move through, as Connecticut Sun does not currently have a dedicated practice facility.
A group in Hartford is hoping to keep the team in Connecticut, submitting a competitive offer “close to” the deal submitted from Boston and spearheaded by Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca.
“We’re going to do what it takes to keep the Sun right here in Connecticut,” Governor Ned Lamont said.
If the deal goes through for Boston, this would be the first WNBA team in Boston. Boston Sun has a nice ring to it!
