Boston Harbor just leveled up your summer plans—and you don’t need boating experience (or a rich friend with a yacht) to get out on the water. Just in time for Fourth of July and the arrival of Sail Boston 2026’s towering ships, this “be your own captain” experience lets you cruise the harbor on your own private electric boat.
Be your own captain on Boston Harbor
Step into a quintessential New England summer with a private ride from Boston Electric Boats. Founded by boating enthusiast Patrick Rourke, the company makes it incredibly easy to captain your own Duffy electric boat—no license, no prior experience, and no stress.
After a quick walkthrough, you’ll steer your own boat along a pre-mapped route past Boston’s most iconic waterfront views, including Seaport, Charlestown, the Zakim Bridge, and TD Garden. The boats cruise at a relaxed 6 mph, making it easy to soak in skyline views, snap photos, or just drift.
Each boat fits up to 12 people, and with a fleet of six, groups of up to 72 can coordinate a full-on floating celebration. It’s an ideal setup for birthdays, bachelorettes, proposals, or a standout Fourth of July plan on the water.
Even better: kids are welcome, and you can bring your own food and drinks. There’s also a full menu of add-ons available.
New this season: Sail Boston views, seafood, and BEB The Club
This summer brings a rare bonus. From July 11–16, Sail Boston 2026 will fill the harbor with more than 50 tall ships—and this is one of the most unique ways to see them up close without the crowds.
Boston Electric Boats is also rolling out elevated onboard experiences. They’ve partnered with Board & Blossom for charcuterie and The Daily Catch for next-level seafood options like chilled platters and freshly shucked oysters.
For frequent cruisers, there’s also BEB The Club, a new membership designed for those who want regular access to private harbor outings for personal or work events.
Pricing, booking, and what to know
Pricing has been updated for the 2026 season, with flexible options depending on your group size:
- “Be your own captain” (up to 6 people): starting at $439
- “Be your own captain” (up to 12 people): starting at $519
- Captain-provided charter (up to 6 people): starting at $639
Rates may increase slightly Friday through Sunday, with real-time pricing available via the BEB site.
All rentals are two hours, giving you plenty of time to cruise, relax, and take in the harbor. If steering isn’t your thing, you can still book a captained charter and enjoy the ride.
