Looking for something to do in Boston tonight? October 7 brings a free classical concert to one of the city’s most beautiful music venues, with Mozart and Shostakovich on the programme.
Boston has no shortage of ways to hear classical music, from the atmospheric Candlelight concerts that fill local venues with thousands of candles to performances by some of the city’s leading conservatory musicians. And tonight, the New England Conservatory is offering another option that won’t cost you a penny.
The NEC Philharmonia will take over Jordan Hall at 7:30 p.m., performing two very different symphonies under the direction of conductor David Loebel. The concert is free to attend, although a ticket is required.
The evening begins with Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 in G Minor, one of the composer’s most recognisable early symphonies. Its dramatic opening has a darker, more urgent character than some of Mozart’s lighter works, making it a striking way to begin the programme.
After an intermission, the orchestra will turn to Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E Minor. Written in the aftermath of Stalin’s death, the sprawling symphony is filled with tension, intensity and striking contrasts, creating a very different atmosphere from the Mozart that precedes it.
And there’s no need to worry about having to commit to an expensive night out: the concert is completely free and open to the public. You just need to reserve a ticket before heading to Jordan Hall.
NEC Philharmonia performs Mozart and Shostakovich tonight, Wednesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Jordan Hall.
