The menu at Taco Azul is small and straightforward, making one of everything perfect. While there are many traditional plates in Mexican cuisine, Leyva chose to focus Taco Azul on tacos, quesadillas, and a small selection of appetizers and beverages.
We want this to be the best guac you’ve ever had, the best queso you’ve ever had,” Leyva shares.
And Leyva’s goal is certainly realized in the food presented at the table. Taco Azul offers some of the best chips, guac, queso, and tacos in Boston. They take the extra step to handmake house blue corn tortillas and chips, which both look and taste divine. This delicious base offers the canvas for a layered explosion of flavors and textures.
One of everything perfect at Taco Azul
There are several tacos to pick from on the menu at Taco Azul, and you can’t go wrong with any of them, but the Shrimp Al Pastor and Beef Birria, inspired by LA, are a must. With philanthropy in its DNA, Taco Azul offers a rotating taco each month known as the Smiling Taco. Proceeds from the Smiling Taco are directed towards a different charity each month.
Pair your tacos with a few quesadillas for the ultimate tasting. Taco Azul serves a refined taco-sized quesadilla with a layer of griddled Oaxaca cheese that allows you to sample more than one flavor. The Quesa-Birria and Quesa-Chicken are some favorites, and Taco Azul offers vegetarian options across its menu as well. Find yourself transported to Mexico when pairing the tacos and quesadillas with an order of guac and a few fresh house beverages like The Spicy Mockarita and Watermelon Agave made with Seedlip Agave.
Leyva notes the day-to-day success of his new restaurant, Taco Azul, is the smiles on customers’ faces, a pillar known as “smileable experiences” at the brand new Taco Azul on Beacon Hill. Taco Azul’s upcoming workshops also offer a fun and interactive way to pay it forward.
Workshops include everything from a family-friendly mocktail making class to a tortilla making class. 50% of proceeds from Taco Azul classes aid Southern California Fire Relief Efforts. You can book a class or reservation online.
About Chef Dan Levya
As a first-generation college student, Leyva attended the most prestigious hospitality program in America at Cornell University. After obtaining his degree, in just a decade in New York City, Leyva worked with over 40 restaurants across Manhattan, including the successful Mexican spot, Tacombi. Early success in Leyva’s career landed him a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2021 the Food and Drink category as Co-Owner of Wings Over.
While many of Leyva’s milestone moments took place on the East Coast, Leyva is originally from San Francisco and frequents Mexico City to connect with his Mexican heritage. The flavors of Taco Azul, Leyva’s first solo launching pad in the restaurant industry, are inspired by these regions, which offer powerful tastes that Leyva had a hard time finding in Boston, especially on Beacon Hill.
Taco Azul is already proving to be a popular concept in Boston, with a full house every night. The space is gorgeous and perfect for date night or a casual lunch. Dan Leyva hopes to expand Taco Azul across New England with eyes set on a second location in Cambridge.
