Imagine walking past the Fairmont Copley and encountering Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds singing and dancing through a snow-dusted Boston street. That was the reality for lucky commuters last year.
“Spirited,” Apple TV’s star-studded holiday movie just released in theatres on November 11 and for streaming via Apple TV+ on November 18.
The film follows the story of the Ghost of Christmas Present, played by Ferrell, who summons a dark soul each holiday season. His pick in the film is Clint Briggs, played by Reynolds. The Ghost of Christmas Present’s plan backfires and the film explores how Briggs makes The Ghost contemplate his existence. Oscar-winning actress, Octavia Spencer, plays Briggs’ happy-go-lucky colleague.
The film is a twist on the holiday classic “A Christmas Carol,” told from the perspective of the ghosts in this laugh-out-loud musical. The lighthearted holiday comedy was filmed in towns across Massachusetts including Boston, Worcester, Braintree, Devens, Everett, Framingham, Lynnfield, Melrose, and Weymouth from July to October of 2021. While production did a great job disguising Boston as a snowy New York City, you might just recognize some familiar streets.
One pedestrian found the crew filming outside of the North End’s Bell In Hand Tavern in September 2021!
