Appropriately named Shhh Burger, this Southie Smashburger spot is hiding out in a tiny coffee shop on L Street. Opened in January 2025, the burger’s been on the block for just over one year, and inconspicuously, things are smoking up inside the coffee shop; only in-the-know foodies have this burger on their radar.
There are just two tables and four chairs outside the shop, and no permanent burger branding on the door. A passerby with no knowledge of a burger hidden inside can easily miss it.
The concept, quietly launched by local coffee shop Koko Coffee, aims to bring an elevated Smashburger experience to South Boston. The double-decker burger comes off the flat top grill sizzling hot and juicy.
The Smashburger features two BRANDT beef patties sandwiched between premium New School American Cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, diced onions, Shhh sauce, and two buttery, fluffy brioche buns.
The burger branding is subtle, with just a tiny sign indicating the $11.49 signature Shhh Burger, cheekily named STFU, because it’ll have you chanting that after one bite of this delicious, juicy burger. Sharing the space with their sister company, Koko Coffee, pair this burger with a tall iced latte for a bite that feels wholly nostalgic and comforting.
Koko Coffee has three locations: Downtown, West End, and South Boston; Shhh Burger is inside of the South Boston location. Find it at 87 L Street in Boston, serving burgers every Wednesday-Sunday from 11 AM until 9 PM.
