Sally’s Apizza, the legendary Connecticut-based pizzeria known for its coal-fired pies and deep New Haven roots, makes its permanent Boston debut this year, following a pop-up at Boston Calling. In 2025, Sally’s will open three new locations in Seaport, Dorchester, and historic Concord, Massachusetts.
These highly anticipated openings mark the latest chapter in the brand’s rapid expansion beyond Connecticut, where Sally’s has long been a destination for pizza lovers. With its first Massachusetts outpost in Woburn already drawing crowds since 2023, Sally’s Apizza is poised to become a major player in Boston pizza.
About Sally’s Apizza
Founded in 1938 on Wooster Street in New Haven, Sally’s Apizza has earned a national reputation for its distinctive, charred, coal-fired pizzas and its place in the pantheon of New Haven’s celebrated pizza institutions. For decades, Sally’s remained a single-location icon, beloved by locals and food critics alike. In recent years, under new ownership, the brand has begun expanding across Connecticut—with locations in Stamford, Fairfield, and Wethersfield, and more on the way in Norwalk, Newington, and South Windsor—while also reaching into Massachusetts with its busy Woburn location.
What is Apizza?
“Apizza” (pronounced “ah-beetz”) is a term unique to New Haven and its Italian-American pizza culture. Unlike typical American pizza, apizza is characterized by a thin, chewy, and slightly charred crust, thanks to coal-fired ovens that reach extremely high temperatures.
The style is minimalist: pies are often topped with simple ingredients, such as tomato sauce, mozzarella, and fresh garlic, letting the dough and charred flavor take center stage. Sally’s, along with other New Haven legends, helped define this style, which has since gained national acclaim and a cult following among pizza aficionados. Among the most popular pies is a Basil Burrata Apizza with Sally’s tomato sauce, silky burrata, fresh basil, and basil oil. Pair it with Calabrian chili wings and crispy arancini for a meal that’ll have you exclaiming “buon appetito!”
Sally’s Apizza Coming to Boston for the First Time
Sally’s Apizza is set to open three new Massachusetts locations in 2025 to continue growth beyond Connecticut.
- Seaport (Fort Point): 30 Thomson Place
- Dorchester: South Bay Center
- Concord: 768 Elm Street
These openings follow the success of the Sally’s Woburn location, which has quickly become one of the chain’s busiest since its debut in December 2023. Each new restaurant will feature Sally’s signature coal-fired ovens, a spacious dining room, and a menu focused on authentic apizza.
The Seaport location, in particular, is expected to seat around 140 guests, with pick-up available and windows that open in the warmer months for a vibrant, urban dining experience. Sally’s Apizza’s expansion into Boston and Concord marks an exciting new era for the iconic New Haven pizzeria. Until then, get a taste of Sally’s at Boston’s upcoming Pizza Festival!
