America turns 248 years this July, but there’s a Massachusetts town way older than America! We’re talking more than 15 decades older than America for the South Shore town.
You might know it as Plymouth, home to the famous, but reportedly underwhelming, Plymouth Rock. Founded in 1620, the town of Plymouth came into official formation 156 years before the founding fathers declared the “United States of America” on July 4, 1776.
It was just four years ago that the Mayflower, the ship that famously delivered the pilgrims to Plymouth in 1620, made its way back to Plymouth 400 years later. Plymouth, Massachusetts actually received its name from the pilgrim’s originating town of Plymouth, England.
However, despite being the oldest town in Massachusetts, Plymouth was not the first in America to receive a zip code.
