Massachusetts is getting national recognition as a hiker’s paradise, with one of its most iconic trails earning a spot among the best in the country.
In a newly spotlighted roundup of the “top 100 American hikes of a lifetime,” National Geographic highlights standout trails across every state—ranging from beginner-friendly walks to expert-level treks. For Massachusetts, one trail rises above the rest.
Midstate trail earns national spotlight
The Midstate Trail, stretching roughly 92 miles through central Massachusetts, secured its place on the list thanks to its scenic variety and accessibility. Curated by National Geographic Explorer and seasoned hiker Stephanie Pearson, the guide emphasizes trails that deliver unforgettable landscapes without requiring extreme elevation.
Pearson recommends tackling the Midstate Trail in the fall, when foliage transforms the route into a vibrant corridor of color. Originally mapped out in the 1920s as an 18-mile path, the trail has expanded nearly fivefold, now cutting through forests, wetlands, and ridgelines across the state.
Unlike the steep climbs found in northern New England, the Midstate Trail’s highest point—Wachusett Mountain—rises just over 2,000 feet. The summit still delivers sweeping views, especially during peak foliage, but remains manageable for moderately experienced hikers.
The list also recognizes the Battle Road Trail, a 5-mile, easy hike just outside Boston. Located within Minute Man National Historical Park, the route blends nature with early American history and typically takes about 20 minutes to reach from the city.
