Owner, Maria Stolt, a Sweden-native, sought to invite visitors to the world of Swedish candy culture when she opened Nantasket Sweets by Swedes in 2020. The candy shop celebrates Maria’s childhood memories of Lördagsgodis, “Saturday candy.” In Sweden, candy is such a profound part of the culture, it has a day of the week dedicated to it.
Lördagsgodis was implemented in 1950s Sweden as a way to manage tooth decay and inspire healthy consumption of candy. Flipping the fear on its head, Saturdays turned into a celebratory family tradition for kids (and adults) go to the candy shop, while simultaneously learning about moderation, budgeting, and tooth health. People reserved Saturdays for visiting their local candy shop and trying the new flavors.
In short, Saturdays are for the candy in Sweden!
Stolt transported that feeling of pure ecstasy visiting the candy shop 3,750 miles across the pond to Hull, Massachusetts, where she runs a candy shop across the road from Nantasket Beach. The shop is brimming with hundreds of sweet, sour, and chocolatey Swedish candy. Maria prides herself on her authentic assortment of true Swedish candy, the kind that is hard to find. Some unique treats include Swedish candy corn, lemon Cola licorice, and pear BUBS!
She also offers an assortment of homemade treats like caramels and chocolates. And yes, there are of course the global phenomenon, BUBS, a Swedish brand known for its unique foam texture. The shop offers an assortment of build-your-own bag candy, pre-packaged goods, and curated assortments from Maria. While Hull is a popular destination in summer for the beach, the candy shop is open year round and daily so you can always get your sweet fix!
Hull is a 30-minute ferry ride from Boston Long Wharf, with local bus service to the beach or a 40-minute drive from Boston to the candy shop.
