This fall, take a foliage day trip from Boston to Mount Sugarloaf in South Deerfield. About two hours away, the summit overlooks the Connecticut River, Pioneer Valley farmland and hills covered in fall color.
Mount Sugarloaf foliage day trip
Mount Sugarloaf offers a big view with little planning. From South Sugarloaf’s summit, look out over the Connecticut River and the surrounding valley as the leaves change.
Hike or drive to the summit
Drive up the seasonal summit road for the quickest route, or hike the steep View of the Valley Trail for a more active visit. The longer Pocumtuck Ridge Trail is another option for hikers.
Bring water, layers and sturdy shoes. It is often cooler and windier at the top.
When to visit
Plan for mid-October, when foliage in the Pioneer Valley is often at its best. Go early on weekends for easier parking and fewer people at the overlook.
