Trusted for its restaurant recommendations since 1900, Michelin introduced a new metric for the other integral part of the hospitality industry last year, hotels. Only a handful of New England hotels received the Michelin Key, in categories of one, two, or three keys.
What makes a Michelin Key hotel?
With Michelin Stars reserved for restaurants, the Michelin Key symbolizes outstanding performance of a hotel across five main components:
- Architecture and interior design
- Quality and consistency of service
- Personality and character
- Value for the price
- Contribution to the guest experience in a particular location
The Michelin Guide team distinguishes 317 of America’s best hotels with keys, from the over 5,000 mentioned in the Michelin Guide. This year, Michelin expanded the selection to include hotels on global scale, designating 2,457 hotels worldwide with one, two, or three keys.
According to Michelin, the final list of this year’s Michelin Key hotels stems from, “the culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the Michelin Stars for restaurants, the Michelin Keys are our most outstanding hotels.” On November 18, the organization announces the first-ever Michelin Guide for Boston dining, a milestone for the local restaurant industry.
