Since 2009, the Marshfield Hills General Store came under the ownership of Steve Carrell and his sister-in-law, Tish Vivado. The Massachusetts native most famously known for his portrayal of Michael Scott on The Office, purchased the shop to preserve a piece of Massachusetts history.
Carrell was born in Concord, Massachusetts but grew up in the Marshfield area. It’s also where he met his wife, Nancy Carrell who is also a Marshfield native. In 2008 when his sister-in-law, Tish Vivado notified him that the Marshfield Hills General Store was up for sale, it was a no-brainer for him to purchase the shop.
He paid a sum of a half million dollars. Later, more money was used to restore the 790-square-foot shop built in 1853.
While Carrell’s work keeps him traveling or on the west coast, him and his family do summer near Marshfield and sometimes pop into the candy emporium general store hybrid. However, on the regular, it is his sister-in-law, Tish Vivado, who manages the general store and its nine employees.
Steve noted in past interviews that he doesn’t picture himself ever running the store, but enjoys the perks of being the owner, like free candy and preserving an important piece of Marshfield nostalgia. If he’s visiting Massachusetts for press or travel, there’s a chance you’ll see him at the general store. But his essence is always in the shop, with a corner of the store dedicated to The Office memorabilia like Dunder Mifflin tumblers and t-shirts.
