If you’ve been looking for a reason to escape Boston for the weekend, here’s a compelling one: Madison Beach Hotel in Madison, Connecticut — just under two hours down the coast — has just taken a double win at USA TODAY’s 2026 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, landing at #4 in both the Best Waterfront Hotels/Resorts and Best Hotel Restaurant categories.
Methodology
Candidates are first nominated by travel experts, then opened to reader voting — which makes the recognition harder to dismiss as industry backslapping. For a boutique property with just 33 guest rooms and one premier residence, competing nationally against full-scale resorts is no small feat.
USA TODAY highlighted the hotel’s private beach and balcony rooms, including a two-bedroom suite with a wraparound balcony overlooking Long Island Sound. The property sits roughly halfway between Boston and New York City on the Connecticut Shoreline, and holds a AAA Four Diamond rating as well as a Hilton Hotel of the Year title — the top honor across all Hilton brands.
The Wharf makes the case too
The hotel’s onsite restaurant earned its own separate award. The Wharf was singled out by USA TODAY as “the place to be for New England seafood and creative continental classics,” with judges noting its open-air porch directly over the sand and a farm-to-table menu led by Executive Chef Christophe Santos. It’s the kind of dining setup — salt air, Sound views, local catch — that’s easy to drive two hours for on its own.
General manager John Mathers credited the win to the specifics: “Whether it’s dinner overlooking the Sound, time spent by the water, a special event or the way our team makes someone feel welcome, it’s those individual moments that define the experience.”
Madison Beach Hotel is located at 94 West Wharf Road, Madison, Connecticut, and is part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, managed by Distinctive Hospitality Group — which also operates the Holiday Inn Boston–Cambridge.
