The LEGO Group is bringing a playful twist to one of Boston’s most cherished spring traditions this Mother’s Day weekend, joining Duckling Day with a hands-on family activation on Boston Common.
Boston Common gets a new playground

Timed to celebrate both the holiday and the legacy of Make Way for Ducklings, the free “Let’s Start Building” experience invites preschoolers and their families to build, play, and explore creativity together in the heart of the city.
The activation centers on themes familiar to generations of Bostonians: storytelling, family and first adventures. Inspired by Robert McCloskey’s classic tale of a mother duck guiding her ducklings through Boston, LEGO’s experience encourages young children to begin their own building journeys using DUPLO bricks designed for small hands.
Festivities kick off Saturday, May 9, with the “Authorized Quack-struction Zone,” where LEGO Master Model Builders will lead families in assembling a larger-than-life Mama Duck. The structure, expected to stand more than 10 feet tall, will be built collaboratively throughout the day, with children contributing pieces at dedicated build stations. Lounge areas will also be available for parents.
On Sunday, May 10, the completed Mama Duck and her ducklings will debut near the Parkman Bandstand, offering a centerpiece for photos during Duckling Day celebrations. Additional build tables and free-play areas will remain open for families.
LEGO x Duckling Day schedule
The event is free and open to the public. Saturday’s activities run from 10 AM to 4 PM at the corner of Beacon and Charles streets on Boston Common. Sunday’s programming takes place from 10 to 11:45 AM and noon to 2 PM.
The activation is part of LEGO’s broader effort to support early childhood creativity and development through play.
