A little over 1.5 hours from Boston lies Kennebunkport, a tiny little port town in Maine, where every February is a celebration of all things red and romantic. You might recognize Kennebunkport’s name as it was also recognized as one of the “best Christmas towns in the country,” according to HGTV.
From February 1 to 29, Kennebunkport will “Paint the Town Red” and host a variety of deals, events, and celebrations that earns this town the tile of “Most Romantic Town” in New England. From seaside walks and horse-drawn carriages to ice skating and cross-country skiing, read on to find the best things to do in Kennebunkport this February for the “Paint the Town Red” season.
Where to stay
Many hotels and inns offer special prices during the month of February in Maine. For luxurious resorts, we recommend Rhumb Line Resort, a family-friendly hotel nestled in the woods near the ocean. Equally as luxurious are the B&Bs of the Kennebunkport Captains Collection, four historic homes that are a block from the beach and an 8-minute walk from Dock Square. For inns, the Breakwater Inn and Seaside Inn will offer deals this month as well.
For something more remote, the Sandy Pines Campground is secluded but just as comfortable as in-town hotels – in fact, it made our list of the best glamping campsites in New England!
Where to eat
Luckily, Kennebunkport has no shortage of great eats during February, which would typically be the town’s off-season. The Boathouse, a waterfront hotel, has some spectacular seafood to match their unbeatable views. Mornings In Paris is a European-style cafe with everything you’ll need to start your day on vacation, from flaky pastries to rich coffee. For a romantic dinner setting, check out Stripers, Chez Rosa, or Alisson’s for all your seafood needs!
To celebrate Valentine’s Day visitors are welcomed to enjoy a romantic themed dinner from Executive Chef Peter Rudolph at Ocean. The logically named restaurant has sweeping ocean front views! Special dinners include a Black Truffle dinner, “elevated comfort,” Maine lobster and more!
What to do
Just walking through Dock Square, you’ll find that Kennebunkport has an assortment of boutiques, general stores, and art galleries that are fun to browse. And of course, there are many options for outdoor adventures during the winter as well, from skiing to sledding to skating.
