For a foliage day trip that pairs colorful leaves with a dramatic waterfall, head to Kaaterskill Falls in New York’s Catskill Mountains. The two-tiered waterfall is about a 3.5-hour drive from Boston and makes a scenic fall escape.
A waterfall framed by fall color
Located near Haines Falls, Kaaterskill Falls drops roughly 260 feet in two sections. During autumn, the surrounding Catskills turn shades of red, orange and gold, creating a striking backdrop for the falls.
The waterfall has long drawn artists, writers and hikers, and it remains one of the Catskills’ most photographed natural landmarks.
An easy overlook or longer hike
For the quickest view, park at the Laurel House Road parking area and follow the short, gravel path to an observation platform overlooking the falls and valley.
Visitors who want a longer hike can continue toward the lower section of the falls on a steeper trail. Bring sturdy shoes, as wet leaves, mud and rocks can make the route slippery in fall.
Other designated parking areas are available near Scutt Road and South Lake. Do not park along Route 23A.
Plan your foliage trip
Kaaterskill Falls is free and open year-round, but fall weekends can draw large crowds. Arrive early for the best chance at parking and a quieter walk.
Stay on marked trails and use designated overlooks. The terrain around the falls can be steep and slippery, particularly after rain.
For a full Catskills foliage outing, combine the waterfall with a drive through Kaaterskill Clove or a walk around nearby North-South Lake.
