Juneteenth, a holiday established in 2020, is a time to reflect and celebrate emancipation of the last enslaved people. The holiday marks the historic anniversary of June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Boston will have several events on Thursday, June 19, celebrating and honoring this day. Check them out below:
- 10 AM-5 PM: Juneteenth Open House at Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Ave.) Massachusetts residents have free admission
- 10:15 AM: Annual Juneteenth Flag Raising at Massachusetts State House (24 Beacon St.)
- 11 AM: 8th Annual Malden Juneteenth Celebration (Lincoln Commons; 33 Cross St., Malden)
- 10:30 AM-5 PM: Free Juneteenth guided tours on Georges Island (Ferry departure 190 Atlantic Ave.)
- 12:30 PM: 15th annual Roxbury Juneteenth Flag Raising (183 Roxbury Street, Roxbury)
- 12-4 PM: Emerald Necklace Brookline Juneteenth Block Party with free food, ice cream, line dancing and more (Florida Ruffin Ridley School; 345 Harvard Street, Brookline)
- 1:45 PM: Roxbury Juneteenth Parade (Starts at: 183 Roxbury Street and Ends at: 300 Walnut Ave.)
- 12-4 PM: Newton Juneteenth Celebration (Hyde Community Center)
- 10:30 AM: 2.5 hour Juneteenth Underground Railroad Tour of Beacon Hill (Tickets are $35)
- 9 AM-12 PM: 5th Annual Gloucester Juneteenth Celebration
- All-day: Free admission to Institute of Contemporary Art
