Juneteenth, a holiday established in 2020, is a time to reflect and celebrate emancipation of the last enslaved people. The holiday marks the historic anniversary of June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Boston will have several events on Wednesday, June 19 celebrating and honoring this day. Check them out below:
- 10 AM-5 PM: Juneteenth Open House at Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Ave.) Massachusetts residents have free admission
- 10:15 AM: Annual Juneteenth Flag Raising at Massachusetts State House (24 Beacon St.)
- 11 AM: 7th Annual Malden Juneteenth Celebration (Lincoln Commons; 33 Cross St., Malden)
- 11 AM-3PM: Juneteenth Concert and guided tours on Georges Island (Ferry departure 190 Atlantic Ave.)
- 12 PM: Roxbury Juneteenth Flag Raising (Museum of the National Center for Afro American Artists; 300 Walnut Ave., Roxbury)
- 12-6 PM: Juneteenth Block Party with free Caribeean food, ice cream, DJ and more (Florida Ruffin Ridley School; 345 Harvard Street, Brookline)
- 1-6 PM: Juneteenth Parade (Museum of the National Center for Afro American Artists; 300 Walnut Ave., Roxbury)
- 2-9 PM: Forever Free Juneteenth Concert (Allen Center; 35 Webster St, Newton)
- All-day: Free admission to Institute of Contemporary Art
