New England’s ultimate scenic road trip awaits! While the region is filled with many scenic byways, one route in particular is getting major recognition.
Budget Travel recently shared a list of the top “Great American Drives” in the nation. Only one New England route made the list.
Heralded for its scenic tour through the Green Mountains to Ludlow to a seven-mile stretch through Granville Gulf State Reservation, Vermont Route 100 has been named among the Great American Drives. The publication notes:
Snaking through the center of Vermont all the way from the Massachusetts border to Canada, Route 100 feels less like a state highway than one long, rambling backcountry path. A strict billboard ban preserves every vista as the road winds between the peaks of Green Mountain National Forest and passes through quaint valley towns like Hyde Park and Weston, population 631. With only farm stands, country stores, and covered bridges breaking up the landscape, you’ll consistently feel 200 miles from the 21st century.
While especially spectacular during fall, the route is also a gorgeous springtime drive as well. It’s mainly a two-lane road. There’s plenty of detour options along the route too, from antiquing, to Vermont’s famous dairy farms and covered bridges.
To take the route from its closest point to Boston, cross the border from Colrain, Massachusetts, about 2 hours west of Boston. From there, begin your trip North on Vermont Route 100. It travels all the way up to Troy, Vermont, not far from the Canadian border.
