Coburns’ General Store, a beloved institution in Strafford, Vermont, and a frequent haunt of folk-pop sensation Noah Kahan— is searching for a new proprietor to continue its century-long legacy. The Strafford Community Trust is spearheading the effort to preserve this vital community hub as the Coburn family looks toward retirement after managing the store for almost five decades.
More than just a place of business, Coburns’ serves as the heart of Strafford. In addition to offering essential services like groceries, banking, a post office, gas, and laundry facilities, the store fosters a strong sense of community. It’s where villagers connect, sharing news, celebrating milestones, and offering support. Coburns’ is the glue that holds Strafford together, providing a space for conversation, package drop-offs, after-school snacks, bake sales, and public announcements.
Two-time Grammy Nominated Artist Noah Kahan who grew up in South Strafford was like a son to the current owners Melvin and Sue Coburn, who proudly display Noah Kahan merch at the general store. Dedicated fans flock to the shop to meet the Coburns and get a taste of the village Kahan so frequently references in his music.
Like family to Kahan, Melvin and Sue made a vocal appearance on Kahan’s 2023 album, “Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)” extended version of The View Between Villages.
The Strafford Community Trust has secured an agreement to purchase the store, ensuring its continued operation. Now, they are seeking a community-minded individual to embrace the tradition of shopkeeping in this cherished location. Those interested in becoming the next proprietor of Coburns’ General Store and carrying on its legacy can find more information or make a contribution here.
