Every summer, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) sets up at Tanglewood Music Center for an iconic and well-loved New England music festival – and this year is set to be no different. From classical concerts to film tributes to a popular artist series and more, there is no shortage of concerts to catch this season.
What is on this year’s line-up?
The BSO classical concert series is led by Music Director Andris Nelsons alongside other acclaimed conductors. These performances are a chance to enjoy classical musicians in a different setting – instead of sitting in a concert hall, you’ll enjoy the music from the Tanglewood lawn, with sunsets and stars providing the perfect backdrop for a summer night out. The Boston Pops series takes place in the same gorgeous location, but features a range of high-energy concerts with orchestra backing, including a John Williams-tribute and a Cynthia Erivo performance. Finally, the Popular Artist Series is a range of shows that doesn’t feature the orchestra. Expect the likes of Ziggy Marley, Brandi Carlile, Alabama Shakes and more to be announced soon.

What can I expect from a night at Tanglewood?
Whether you’re spending a weekend in the Berkshires or just heading over for a day trip, a concert at Tanglewood really is one of those New England experiences that will have you wanting to return every year. There’s a reason it’s such a beloved summer tradition for Bostonians! You can choose to purchase a seat within the Shed (which will mean a roof is protecting you from any unexpected weather), or buy a lawn ticket to listen completely under the stars. You can bring your best picnic gear to enjoy a feast of your choosing during the concert, or there are also food vendors on site. Concerts at Tanglewood take place regardless of the weather – so just ensure you’re prepared for all scenarios!
Do I need to buy tickets?
Tickets are now available for the full summer season and are required for entry to all performances. Make sure you plan ahead now and secure your spot, as popular performances may sell out in advance. If you’re planning a family outing, you can get four free children’s tickets for those under the age of 18 to BSO and Boston Pops performances. Children under the age of two are eligible for free tickets to most performances.
