We’ve outdone the Alaskans in cold. For most of the week of January 19, and especially Saturday, January 24, Boston will be colder than Alaska.
And we’re not talking by a little!
Boston turns into a polar vortex for the weekend
The “feels like” temperature in Boston today is barely a double digit at a bone-chilling 12° Fahrenheit. Wind chills plus gusts up to 20 miles-per-hour are suppressing most of the temperatures, creating an artic blast expected to last through Sunday—luckily most of us will be too busy cheering on the Pats on Sunday anyways to worry about outdoor temperatures. And the temperatures are expected to climb ever so slightly the following week, but still expect another week of “feels like” single-degree temps ranging from 5-11° Fahrenheit.
Wicked, wicked cold
Still, even with that high in mind, Boston will be colder than much of Alaska. Most of Alaska is in the low 30s for the remainder of the week and next week, especially on the coast in Anchorage and Juneau. Juneau’s high of 35° and low of 23° and Anchorage’s similar temperatures at a high of 35° and low of 17° are several degrees warmer than this week’s low in Boston!
The average daily temperature during January in Boston is between 36 and 23 and in Alaska is between 30 and 5.
The last few warm winters may have made us forget just how cold this New England city can get! Still, it’s nothing compared to Boston’s recorded all time low of -18° Fahrenheit on February 9, 1934.
