We’ve outdone the Alaskans in cold. For most of the week of January 20, and especially today, Wednesday, January 22, Boston will be colder than Alaska.
And we’re not talking by a little!
The temperature in Boston today is barely above 0° Fahrenheit. Wind chills are suppressing most of the morning temperatures in the single digits, starting the morning commute at 2° for most of us on Wednesday, January 22. Luckily the sun and clear skies expected throughout the rest of the day will offer Bostonians some grace, with temperatures inching up to a possible high of 20°.
Still, even with that high in mind, Boston will be colder than much of Alaska. Most of Alaska is in the high 30s on Wednesday and for the remainder of the week, especially on the coast in Anchorage and Juneau. Juneau’s high of 39° and low of 37° and Anchorage’s similar temperatures at a high of 36° and low of 34° are over 30° warmer than today’s low in Boston!
The average daily temperature during January in Boston is between 36 and 23 and in Alaska is between 30 and 5.
The last few warm winters may have made us forget just how cold this New England city can get! Still, it’s nothing compared to Boston’s recorded all time low of -18° Fahrenheit on February 9, 1934.
