Brookline, Massachusetts might come to mind when you think of top-rated schools and excellent (albeit competitive) job opportunities. The giant question mark lies with the affordability.
Travel + Leisure recently rounded up the list of America’s top ten suburbs for 2024 when weighing these three key factors. The publication garnered data from the nation’s “expert realtors and recent livability rankings.”
Only one New England suburb made the list, the town of Brookline, Massachusetts. Luckily, it’s not that far from Boston, so if you’re looking to settle for a standout suburban lifestyle, you might not need to go very far.
Brookline ranked sixth on the list for its proximity to Boston, rich history, and world-class medical and educational facilities in close proximity.
Brookline housing market is becoming more balanced as inventory for single-family homes and condos continues to grow, notes one of Boston’s top real estate brokers, Dave Costello of Advisors Living.
Travel+ Leisure highlights that although this is a roundup of affordable suburbs, Brookline is by no means cheap, with a median home price over $1 million and 45% of listings selling above the asking price.

Brookline is the only New England suburb on the list, with many of the cities and towns listed on the East Coast.
