It’s been a long 13 years since James Cameron’s Avatar hit the theaters, sweeping the world into a frenzy. But this December, patient fans will finally get to see the highly-anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar still ranks as the highest grossing movie of all time, generating nearly 3 billion dollars since 2009, according to Box Office Mojo. So, we can only expect the sequel to be well worth the wait!
To catch you up, the first movie followed a paraplegic Marine, named Jake Sully, who was sent to the planet Pandora (home to the Na’vi creatures) on a mission. Through an Avatar (human/Na’vi hybrid) that’s linked to Jake’s mind, he is able to move freely around the planet that has become dangerously poisonous to humans.
As the plot ensues, Jake finds himself at an internal conflict whether to stay true to his mission or to help save the Na’vi creatures, who he has formed a strong bond with, from destruction.
On December 16th, theatergoers can revisit the mystical planet of Pandora filled with Direhorses, Ikrans and more. See where we last left off with Jake, Neytiri and the rest of the Na’vi creatures by getting your AMC tickets at a reduced price today. According to Digital Spy, the sequel began filming in 2017, but its release date was pushed back due to Covid-19. Similar to the first movie, Avatar: The Way of Water will run for 190 minutes (three hours and 10 minutes).
Cameron has already confirmed to Empire that an Avatar 3 is coming, as some scenes for the next movie have already been captured. Talk about a 4th and 5th movie have been had, though neither are promised. Fortunately, the release of each future movie is expected to occur much quicker, at a rate of every two years.
