Historic landmark of New England travel
Built in 1884, The Asticou Hotel, formerly the Asticou Inn, began housing boarders in 1870. The Savage family, whose garden and many touches remain, operated the hotel for three generations. In an effort to preserve this beloved historic landmark, the hotel reopens its doors this June following an extensive renovation. According to the Mount Desert island history, “the Wabanaki (a group of local indigenous), who called the island Pemetic, meaning ‘range of mountains,’ were led by a local Sakom (Chief) known as Asticou.”
A new century for The Asticou Hotel
The renovations are under the wing of Atlantic Hospitality, spearheaded by Maine-based hotelier and entrepreneur Tim Harrington of the exquisite waterfront cottages, The Dunes on the Waterfront.
“We’re thrilled to bring The Asticou into a new chapter while honoring the rich history and heritage that has made it such a beloved landmark in Maine,” said Harrington, Chairman of Atlantic Hospitality. “This renovation is not just about enhancing the guest experience; it’s about preserving the essence of what has made The Asticou special for over a century. We’ve blended timeless elegance with modern comforts, creating a space where guests can experience the natural beauty of Mount Desert Island in a setting that feels both grand and intimate. We can’t wait to welcome both new and returning guests to this extraordinary destination.”
The celebrated property debuts a fresh look and feel this summer while preserving the original structure and paying homage to its historic roots. The Asticou unveils a total of 82 thoughtfully designed rooms, including 50 renovated guest rooms and suites inside the original inn, as well as the addition of 15 harborside cottages and 17 harbor-view spa suites with terraces.
American charm meets European elegance
The reimagined Asticou experience will include a heated pool with a poolside grille, an expansive spa, fitness facility, on-site dining experiences and guided outdoor excursions. The new design of the property will keep its New England charm with textures that pay homage to the hotel’s surroundings and history:
“The design blends old European elegance with early American charm, creating a unique tension between aristocratic society and the lively spirit of Acadia,” said Krista Stokes, Director of Design & Brand at Atlantic Hospitality. “The newly reimagined Asticou will allow guests to immerse themselves in both raw nature and refined comfort with a balance between the grandeur of a historic hotel and the intimate, cozy feel of old Maine.”
The Asticou Hotel is slated to reopen in June 2025 and is now accepting reservations. Learn more and book your getaway online.
