Amtrak, alongside partners from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA), the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), and the Rail Passengers Association (RPA), will break ground today, Thursday, November 6, on a major modernization of the Southampton Rail Yard in South Boston.
The $583 million project, fully funded by the Federal Railroad Administration, will include the construction of a new train maintenance facility and a series of upgrades designed to prepare for the arrival of Amtrak’s new Airo trainsets. These state-of-the-art trains will serve both the Northeast Regional and Amtrak Downeaster routes in the coming years.
When completed, the new facility will enhance efficiency for both passengers and employees by expediting train maintenance and reducing turnaround times, helping deliver more reliable and frequent service.
The new facility represents a critical investment in modern rail infrastructure and Amtrak’s ongoing efforts to expand and improve passenger rail service across New England.
