Long before becoming the frontman of TOOL, one of progressive metal’s most influential bands, Maynard James Keenan was spending evenings at a Cambridge bar, occasionally getting up to sing at open-mic nights. That unlikely chapter of his musical journey took place at The Cantab Lounge, a long-running neighbourhood venue in Central Square with its own place in Boston’s music history.
Keenan has spoken about his time in the Boston area in interviews, recalling how he would visit The Cantab to watch local performers and sometimes join in himself. He has also cleared up a detail that’s occasionally been misremembered: these weren’t karaoke sessions, but open-mic nights featuring live musicians.
And there was some rather impressive company in the room. Keenan recalled that Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry would occasionally turn up at the Cambridge bar, adding another unexpected connection between Boston’s rock history and TOOL’s early story.
At the time, Keenan was still finding his feet musically. Before eventually relocating to Los Angeles and forming TOOL with guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Paul D’Amour and drummer Danny Carey, he had spent time in Michigan playing with an experimental band called Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty. His Boston years were another stop along a rather unconventional route to rock stardom.

Today, The Cantab remains a familiar name in Cambridge’s live-music scene, making it a curious little stop for TOOL fans interested in the frontman’s life before worldwide recognition. Next time you’re around Central Square, you can visit the bar where one of metal’s most distinctive voices once took the mic.
For TOOL fans wanting to hear the band’s music in a different way, there’s another opportunity in Boston. Candlelight: Tribute to TOOL brings the band’s distinctive sound to the Simons Theatre at the New England Aquarium where the Rasa String Quartet will reinterpret tracks including Schism, Vicarious, Forty Six & 2 and Sober.
Surrounded by thousands of candles, the 60-minute performance offers a rather different way to experience the music that Keenan once performed in Cambridge’s local bars. Performances run from November 13 through January 23, 2027.
