The Boston Public Library has announced it will become the first public library system in the United States to host piano learning stations, with six electric upright pianos installed across four branches. The rollout is part of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation‘s “Keys of Inspiration” programme — a music education initiative founded by world-renowned pianist Lang Lang — and it starts in Boston.
The six pianos will be placed at Grove Hall and Hyde Park (two each) and Lower Mills and Teen Central at the Central Library in Copley Square (one each). Each station includes an electric upright piano with weighted keys, a bench, an Android tablet, and headphones. The tablet connects to TheONE Smart Piano Learning app, which guides users from basic technique through chords and full songs — no instructor required.
The stations are free to use on-site and designed primarily for children and teens, though nothing stops a curious adult from sitting down. The goal extends beyond individual skill-building: the programme aims to build a culture of music appreciation in the surrounding neighbourhood, create performance opportunities for students, and draw in families and community members.
A partnership rooted in Boston
Boston isn’t a random starting point. The Keys of Inspiration programme launched its very first school partnership here in 2013, at Orchard Gardens School and Boston Arts Academy — both part of Boston Public Schools. The BPL rollout deepens a relationship between the library and those school programmes that has been running for more than a decade.
The programme currently operates 107 full-time piano curricula across 16 school districts in the US and Europe, embedded in Title I elementary schools. The library expansion — beginning simultaneously in Boston and London — marks its first move into public library systems.
Boston’s claim to being the birthplace of public music education in America gives the milestone an extra layer of significance. For patrons curious about what’s coming to their branch, full details are available on the BPL website.
