The largest town in Rhode Island is home to a key production facility for jeweler Tiffany & Co.
The luxe American jewelry brand, Tiffany & Co. manufactures the Super Bowl trophy each year. The Manhattan-born brand has been making jewelry since 1837.
Tiffany & Co. designed and made every Super Bowl trophy in history, since 1967, when it was the “World Professional Football Championship Trophy.” In 1970, the league renamed it the Vince Lombardi trophy. Lombardi’s coaching transformed the Green Bay Packers into an NFL dynasty, similar to the transformation New England witnessed with Belichick and Brady. The trophy donned a new name in his honor.
Just 45 minutes outside of Boston, skilled artisans produce the annual Super Bowl trophy. Tiffany & Co. produces the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy in a manufacturing facility in Cumberland, Rhode Island, a town in Providence County.
The trophy boasts 8 pounds of sterling silver and requires four months to make. A skilled silversmith team makes the trophy by hand. In total, the process is about 72 hours over the course of the four months, and a new trophy is made each year, using the original design sketched on a napkin by a Tiffany & Co. co-founder in 1966.
Let’s hope the boys can bring the trophy back home where it belongs this weekend! Check out some of our favorite spots to watch game day in Boston!
