Construction of the 51-story South Station Tower, slated to open in 2025, yet again came to a halt. A fire erupted from the construction site above South Station earlier this afternoon. Auditors cancelled construction for the remainder of the day as the site undergoes another safety inspection.
The site shut down not too long ago for another dangerous accident when a steel beam collapsed. Luckily, it caught on the floors below, breaking a window but not hurting any of the workers or pedestrians underneath at the busy South Station.
The fire caused disruption to the construction site but did not impact train schedules or access to the station according to local reports. MBTA shared that bus routes 7 and 11 are detoured but the contained situation did not impact any lines.
Due to the toxic smog emanating from the fire, some recommend wearing a face mask when near the South Station and Downtown Boston area.
Boston Fire came to contain and eradicate the fire. No injuries are reported.
This is a developing story, stay tuned for updates.
