Defining the world’s ‘coziest’ cities
Cashmere socks and movie nights at home might be one’s definition of cozy and another’s might be a night glamping under the stars with wood fire burning and a cup of cocoa topped with torched marshmallows. The entirely subjective term was analyzed by travel insurance company, AllClear who created a “cozy travel guide for Autumn Winter 2024.”
To AllClear, these factors determined the overall coziness score of a city:
- Number of cafes per square mile
- Number of bookshops per square mile
- Theaters, museums, and cinemas per square mile
- Instagram tags in city that mention the word “cozy”
- Average amount of rainfall
- Number of historical sites
Each city received a cozy score out of 100. According to AllClear these are the coziest cities in the world:
- Brussels, Belgium
- Paris, France
- Geneva, Switzerland
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Barcelona, Spain
- Athens, Greece
- Victoria, Canada
- Bath, UK
- Dublin, Ireland
Boston ranked number 13 globally and second in the nation. San Francisco ranked first due to its “mild fall weather” and plethora of cozy cafes and bookstores coupled with frequent fog.
According to AllClear, these are the coziest cities in America:
- San Francisco, California
