Built in 1835, a historic single-family home in Harvard Square is about to become the next coveted Cambridge retreat. The 8-bedroom home that once belonged to the influential Howe family is being converted into Cambridge Common House, a Lark Hotel expected to open later this year.
The Howe family included many notable descendants such as Lois Lilley Howe, one of the first women to graduate from MIT’s architecture program. She went on to establish Boston’s first all-female architectural practice and pioneered the way for future female architects.
The house was purchased by a woman in the Howe family, and many generations stayed tied to the property. With marked chapters on Cambridge’s history for nearly two centuries, 2 Garden Street is preparing to write the next page.
The inn will include lush garden patios, reminiscent of the original garden that prospered for years before it was destroyed by a goat, cozy decor with soft wallpaper, elegant chandeliers, while maintaining its signature facade and iconic red door. Cambridge Common House is expected to arrive in late 2025.
