Right now, millions of travelers rely on Amtrak to get between the two cities. The fastest option, the NextGen Acela, clocks in at roughly a 3.5-hour (210-minute) trip. But the proposed next-generation bullet train could cut that travel time down to just 90 minutes, dramatically reshaping how people commute across the Northeast.
The proposal comes from the North Atlantic Rail initiative, which has outlined an ambitious vision for a high-speed corridor linking Boston, New York City, and key stops like Providence and Hartford. According to early estimates, the full build-out could take up to 20 years and cost around $105 billion, as previously reported in this Bloomberg breakdown.
Momentum appears to be building again. The Northeast High Speed Rail Coalition is now seeking $6 million in federal funding to kickstart early work, with a target to begin construction as soon as 2028 if approvals fall into place.
The project would roll out in phases, ultimately creating a seamless high-speed connection across the Northeast corridor. While Congress has yet to advance major funding legislation, regional leaders continue to advocate for the economic and environmental benefits of faster rail.
The Northeast’s first bullet train

Globally, high-speed rail is already a reality. Countries including Japan, China, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and Taiwan operate bullet trains as a core part of everyday transit. New projects are still expanding, such as a 205 mph line planned between Egypt’s Red Sea coast and France.
The U.S. has attempted similar projects before, including California’s ongoing high-speed rail effort, which has faced delays and political hurdles. Still, supporters argue that a Boston-to-NYC bullet train would be transformative—offering a faster, greener alternative to both flying and driving in one of the country’s busiest travel corridors.
