Amtrak recently restored its train service for the Lake Shore Limited.
The scenic train travels past cascading falls, mountains, forests, and through the picturesque Berkshires from Boston. After running shuttle buses for several months, Amtrak restored the train service that connects Boston South Station with Albany, New York.
An estimated 80,000 guests ride this route, and Amtrak is excited to welcome them back after a landslip near Albany forced an abrupt stop to rail service. The tracks have since been restored, with crews working around the clock to return to regular service for patrons.
Boston to the Berkshires for $20
The scenic voyage takes about 5 hours from Boston to Albany and travels from South Station. In New York, you’ll pass the stunning Finger Lakes region. Stay on board and continue the voyage all the way to Chicago. Enjoy the vast shore of Lake Michigan, the Mohawk River, and the Erie Canal, following a famous Native American Highway in the Midwest.

Ticket prices for Lake Shore Limited vary by date and destination, but sometimes tickets from Boston to Albany (or even beyond) are less than $100! If traveling from Boston to the Berkshires stop, Pittsfield (PIT), tickets run as low as $20 on select dates! The trip is under 4 hours and travels the entire width of the state, allowing you explore Massachusetts from East to West!
