A fresh, hot-pressed egg and cheese breakfast sandwich for just one Lincoln is hard to come by these days.
What’s also hard to come by in the city?
Bodegas. Don’t let the name mislead you. Montrose Spa on Massachusetts Avenue is 100% bodega and 0% glycolic acid peel.
Serving Porter Square and the rest of Neighborhood Nine in Cambridge for more than a half-century, Montrose Spa is just a block from the MBTA Porter Square Station, in proximity to Lesley University and other Mass Ave favorites like Bagelsaurus and Yume Wo Katare.
Tommy Rodriguez, who left Cuba as a teenager in 1970, established the bodega in 1974 serving coffee and breakfast sandwiches in an ever-changing city. One thing that’s stayed the same: Montrose Spa still serves some of the area’s cheapest breakfast sandwiches.
For $5 (and sometimes less), you’ll get an egg and cheese on a toasted English muffin or bagel. Customize it with your own fixings. Montrose Spa also offers bodega favorite sandwiches, still for under $10.
Rodriguez recently retired and handed off ownership, but Montrose Spa is still going strong. The space gts its unique name “Montrose” from a nearby apartment complex and “Spa” from the old-school link between healing spas and carbonated beverages.
